Montgomery Candid Family Photographer | Thomman Family

Montgomery Candid Family Photographer | Thomman Family

This is the Thomman family, some of the most fun and caring people I have ever gotten to work with! This sweet family contacted me recently to book a family session, and I could not have been more excited. Being a Montgomery Candid Family Photographer, I continuously meet amazing clients with amazing stories. And this is one of them.
Meet the Family
A wonderful family of four, the Thomman’s have service for others in their hearts. Dad is in the Army, and that in itself is amazing. Each day, he works hard to protect the lives of others around him.  Mom is an assistant principal at an elementary school in College Station.  She has a passion for educating little ones, which is also such a sacrifice for others. Eli, their sweet son has Cystic Fibrosis, but doesn’t let that get in his way at all. He continues to go through life with a happy-go-lucky attitude. And his sister, Samantha, is one of the sweetest and kind-hearted little souls I have ever met.  The Thomman’s are such a selfless, beautiful family, and I am so honored to have been able to serve them by capturing sweet memories that they can cherish for a lifetime!
A Candid Session
Candid photography is my passion, as I love being able to capture raw, natural, beautiful emotions. This sweet family was perfect for this, because they are such amazing, fun people! They had no problem letting loose and getting “in the moment,” which makes for an exciting day for everyone involved. Mom and Dad seemed to thoroughly enjoy spending a day with their kiddos. Eli was filled with energy, laughing and giggling so much! Samantha was sweet as can be, and smiled such a beautiful smile when interacting with her family. Reading is very important to the Thomman’s, so I loved that the kids brought books along with them to read. The books they were holding gave a little bit of a personalized touch, because their names were in the titles. All in all, it was a beautiful day with beautiful clients, of course!
Working with this sweet family has given me a little more insight about what it means to be a servant for other people. I think we could all gain something from the Thomman’s in one way or another.

Houston Photography: How to Manage Personal Life with being a Small Business Owner

Houston Photography: How to Manage Personal Life with being a Small Business Owner

If I had a dollar for every single time someone says, “I have no idea how you manage it all” I would seriously be the next Bill Gates.  haha 😉  As a mom, it seems that I always have my hands full. I mean, let’s face it, us moms are so busy constantly! From taking care of kids (and all that entails), taking care of personal responsibilities, making my husband feel loved and special, and trying to have a personal life in between, it seems impossible to add anything else on the to-do list. However, I had a passion for photography, and wanted to start a business following my dreams. I am here to tell all of you busy folks that it is possible! Whether you are a parent, a student, or just a busy person, you can definitely pursue so much more. Here are 4 tips on managing personal life with starting a new business.  When I first started doing Houston Photography, I “wore all the hats” and often felt like I was drowning.  I am proud to say, that I started doing these 4 things and my quality of life has significantly improved!
1. Start by outsourcing your least favorite task (whether it be in your personal life or business side). For example, hire a house cleaner, a photo editor, a person to manage your emails, or social media posts, etc. One great example of this is Wal-Mart (the most successful business ever). One person doesn’t wear all the hats. There’s department managers, store managers, regional managers, clerks, financial people, social media managers, etc etc etc etc! It’s proven to be successful. The same goes in any business.  So to outsource the tasks that doesn’t “ruffle your feathers” that seems like, “I can’t afford that, I can do it, etc.”  But the reality is- to make space for big thinking, you HAVE to do this.
2. Set yourself “work hours” – and don’t skew from them. This creates more “normalcy” in your life and sets good expectations for your clients on response times and turnaround times. It also kind of forces you to have time off. Time off is such a crucial part of owning a business. You need to take time for yourself and your family without work affairs involved.  And REALLY take time off.  Shut your emails off after your work hours are over, set up an auto responder for said emails that tell your clients that you will get back to them first thing in the morning, etc.  Enjoy these moments with your babies.  With your husband or wife.  Time is the only thing we will never be able to get back.
3. Prioritize. Your family should always come first. Many times we often find ourselves consumed with our jobs that we tend to do the opposite. However, making time for your family is something that you will find to be the most rewarding. 30 years from now, you won’t cherish those long nights on the job. What you WILL cherish are the memories made with your loved ones. This doesn’t have to be related to work, either. Make time elsewhere, such as chores around the house. The dishes can wait – take your kids on a bike ride on a beautiful day!
4. You matter, too! Making time for yourself is so important. We all need time to “recharge.” For instance, I enjoy going to the gym and getting a good workout in. This is something for me that I make time for. Without my fitfam over at CrossFit Willis, I think my brain would be on “insane” mode on the regular.  Give yourself a time in the day to read a book, write in your journal, tend to your garden, etc. YOU are so important!

Woodlands and Conroe Family Photography – Campbell Family

Hope you’ve had an absolutely beautiful week! The weather in The Woodlands and Conroe has been super crazy and warm all week and I am posting this session in hopes to bring back the cooler weather just for a few days!!!!! Hey there sweater weather, you there?!!  But I am also very excited for the spring and all the beauty that there is for Woodlands and Conroe Family Photography!!

Speaking of sweater weather, take a peek at this beautifully styled fall family photography session I had the honor to shoot this past month. I just love this family. Tawni is such an incredible friend to me and always makes me look so fab over at her salon.  And it was such a fun experience getting to see how all three of these generation interact with each other. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, posed pictures are great and definitely have their purpose and place….BUT! My absolute favorite shots are the ones where I get to capture the true personalities of each family.

It seriously brought tears to my eyes to see Grandma steal a kiss from Grandpa. Can you imagine how much love must be bursting from these two’s hearts!? Just picture, all of these happy and healthy souls have you to thank for their everything.

If you’re lucky enough to still have your grandparents in your life take the time to give them a quick jingle, I promise you, it’ll make their day. Seriously… Go call them!… I’ll wait…

“No man has ever lived that had enough of children’s gratitude or woman’s love.” – William Butler Yeats

Have a beautiful day guys. Much love <3

My story of pregnancy and miscarriage.

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”

Jeremiah 1:5

What Happened?

I debated whether to write this post or not.  I feel like this is not talked about very often, though it is so common.  I think because it is so common, it is discredited to “not a big deal” or it should not be made into a big deal.  And perhaps, for some, it’s not.  But for me, it is.  There are also many that knew about my pregnancy, but may still be in the dark about what happened, as I haven’t had the courage to text, call, reach out to everyone to explain what happened.  I just couldn’t bare that pain over and over and over again, so I figured a heartfelt note would suffice, where all can be made aware at once.

This time last week, I was so excited for an appointment coming up on February 1st.  February 1st was my 10 week ultrasound to see my new growing baby.  “Baby Oopsie” as we nicknamed him/her.  Haha, unplanned pregnancies (this would have been my second unplanned one) have a way of rattling you up and shaking your world upside down, sideways and then right back up again.  But for us, it was a happy surprise.  Scary, yes.  But really happy.

Friday morning (2-27-2017) I was getting ready to start the morning, did my business, got my oldest little ready and sent off to school, and the youngest one headed off to see her “gigi.”  For about a week, I had noticed my pregnancy symptoms subsiding and I started to feel better.  I was apprehensive to get too excited about it, because when I was pregnant with my other two babies, my morning sickness had me down for at least 12 weeks.  I was just approaching 10 weeks, so it didn’t feel “right.”  **I should also mention that I have extremely bad anxiety, so if you’re reading this and are pregnant, just because my symptoms are exhibited differently or similarly compared to yours, DOES NOT mean that you are miscarrying or you do not have a healthy pregnancy.**  If for some reason you are worried, please do call your doctor. <3

I ran quickly to the restroom and noticed a little bit of spotting.  I tried to keep myself calm, as this happened to me during my first pregnancy and everything was ok.  Who am I kidding… certainly not myself.  I was panicked.  The spotting slowed down and eventually stopped, but my OB/GYN was able to squeeze me in (I cannot say enough wonderful things about my new OB) just to keep me sane and for my peace of mind over the weekend.

I wish it had turned out to be better news, but unfortunately, it did not.  When I arrived to the doctor’s office, they got me in quickly for an ultrasound, where my baby’s heartbeat was not detected.  I had to say it to myself over and over and over again.  “My baby’s heart beat is not there.  I lost my baby.”  This baby who, like my other two, gave me some awful morning sickness, made me extremely fatigued, and the baby who I grew to love and inherently wanted to protect.  I can’t remember really my emotions in that moment, I just felt like I wanted to wake up from this nightmare I thought I wouldn’t have to go through.  I almost made it out of what I call the “danger zone” and had FELT pregnant for about a month.  I just didn’t understand what happened.  And I still don’t.

After speaking with my doctor, I was presented with two choices: let my body miscarry on its own, or to get help with the process and do a D&C.  Initially, like many very brave mothers, I decided to allow my body to do its job (much like labor) and went home.  After speaking with a couple of other mamas who have gone through the same thing, and reading what this experience would be like, this black cloud of fear and worry of “what’s to come” consumed me.  It consumed every thought I had.  I also did not realize how slow the process of miscarriage is (for me it was slow).  So on Monday I went back to my OB/GYN and he was able to move around his schedule and schedule a D&C for me that evening.  I couldn’t bare the thought of how I would react to “what was to come,” and what to do when it did come, and I was terrified of miscarrying naturally and of those thoughts.  I am so grateful for him for doing what he did for me.

What I learned from This.

  1. It’s not my fault.  Nothing I did made this happen.  I am at peace about that.  I am so sad that I will not meet baby oopsie earthside, but you better believe I am so excited to meet them in heaven one day.
  2. How grateful I am for my two that I do have.  I realize that life is a gift.  It most certainly is not guaranteed.  I have two thriving, healthy, caring, and beautiful human beings that God trusted me to care for.  I feel so lucky to have them.  I also feel lucky to have experienced baby oopsie for just a couple months.  As cliche as it sounds, a mother’s love forms as soon as you realize that you have a life in you.  That life was meaningful.  That life was important.  And that life was a gift to me.  I don’t discredit that.
  3. There are so many women who have experienced this.  And it’s not talked about as often as you would think it is, and in my opinion, how often it should be.  It hurts.  And time heals most wounds, but for me, talking about those wounds helps me heal.  So here I am.  I encourage you to reach out if you need to talk to someone.  I want to be there for you and I will share my experience with you.
  4. Initially I felt embarrassed that I had told many people about my pregnancy and thinking of telling them that I had lost my baby was unbearable.  It still kinda is.  After much reflection, I don’t feel embarrassed or ashamed.  I did what most mothers do- got excited for the miracle of life that my body was growing.  I wanted to celebrate this new baby and I was so excited about it.  So I am GLAD my baby was celebrated by many and I am GLAD that I was excited about it.  That’s normal and natural to be excited about your babies.  So BE EXCITED no matter the outcome.
  5. I have an amazing support system.  It’s true.  From family, close friends, my “fit fam” and everyone else in between… I love you.  You made the start of this ongoing process easier to handle.

And for all of you mamas that have gone through this.  I am sorry.  From the bottom of my heart, I am so sorry that you went through this.  All the haunting and scary questions, the anxiety during the first trimester, to analyzing every ache, pain, or lack there of… to the miscarriage itself.  I pray for you and for all you mamas that may experience it, I am here for you.  I’ve always encouraged other mamas to stick together, and this is no different.  We are so unique.  We have to stick together. <3

And to all that have prayed, sent messages, and expressed your care.  You are so amazing.  You are my people and I am grateful for you.

“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”
Psalm 139:14

Montgomery County Tx Family Photographer – O’Leary Family

Montgomery County Tx  Family Photographer – O’Leary Family

Pink sun dresses…Ruffled collars….Monogrammed initials…Could we possibly get any girlier?! How about we throw in two gorgeous little ladies, add a handsome daddy to wrap around their tiny pinkies and a beautiful mommy all dressed in white. A fairy tale you say?… I’d have to agree, but to the O’Leary family– this is simply the life they’ve been blessed with.  It’s a true joy to be able to serve my community and documenting their precious moments.  Being a Montgomery County Tx Family Photographer has also blessed me with special souls such as these.

We did one quick outfit change on the littlest princess and off we were on an adventure. Let’s take a second to stop and appreciate the earthy goodness of this field…Yum!!! Could you possibly imagine a more perfect tree-lined path, with more perfect lighting for a more perfect family?! I’m beginning to see a trend here..  we took to the wide open fields of Montgomery, Tx right next to Fernland Historical Park and Ransom’s Steakhouse right off of HWY 105.  Fernland is nestled right next to the Montgomery County Library and provides such a unique setting for a family portrait session.

I love playing games with the children throughout family portrait sessions. It lightens things up a bit and gets their gigglers going. My favorite game has to be having mommy and daddy lift a blanket high in the air and have the littles sprint under. (Is it just me or are you having flashbacks to Friday’s in elementary gym class??…Ohhh…Parachute day…. Best. Day. Ever.) Aaaanywho.. This game never fails to yield perfect looks of pure joy on the kiddos faces. A child at play is a truly beautiful thing to behold, don’t you think?

It was an honor getting to know and work with this family. I am so grateful for each and every one of my clients and the opportunity I get to sneak in and steal a picture of the beauty that is their world. Enjoy.

The Woodlands Lifestyle Newborn Photography Session – Stampes

The Woodlands Lifestyle Newborn Photography Session – Stampes

Talk about two beautiful boys! This family was such fun to photograph. The faces their littlest one made cracked. me. up.!!  Momma better watch out! Carter’s already got his “come and get me” look down pat! Of course, his big bro did his very best to steal the show (and I have to admit, I didn’t mind one little bit).  The personality in this one is huge!! He had me in a constant fit of giggles– Like, for real.. Too presh… This was everything I love and more with a The Woodlands Lifestyle Newborn Photography Session.  We took to their beautiful apartment off of FM 2978 and The Woodlands Parkway nestled in the back of the Woodlands, Tx.  It was a dream much like this beautiful family was <3

With a 20 minute drive to The Woodlands Mall, and Market St, The Woodlands is always such a fun and beautiful place to do pictures.  When it’s in my client’s home, it’s just all the better.

We had both of the boys all in white, with mom draped in a lovely taupe and white striped dressed, paired perfectly with her handsome hubby dressed in a gorgeous shade of dove gray. This truly beautiful family looked absolutely breathtaking while bathed in floods of perfect natural lighting…Swoon!!

This kind of lighting gives such a fresh, clean feel to the sessions. I can’t help but equate this with the feeling these two parents must be having right about now. A new baby has a tendency to do that to you. It gives you the chance at a fresh start. A new beginning. You have the great responsibility and honor to mold and shape these little humans. A life full of possibilities lie at the very tips of their ever-so-delicate fingers. And I have a feeling this world will be a more wonderful place because of these two little men.

Houston Family and Newborn Photographer – New Years Resolutions

Houston Family and Newborn Photographer – New Year’s Resoultions

Christmas is over (tear tear), our extended family came and went, and life as we know it has returned back to normal.  Normal is good and routine, though we will miss our family that came and visited.  The kids have a bundle of new toys that are keeping their attention and I am trying to hold onto the extra time I have with them before school starts with never ending homework and the hustle and bustle of the new semester.  I do not want to complain, because the joy of seeing my oldest little achieve things like reading and being so super proud of himself is indescribable.

I have been reading a lot about how perspective is everything and I wholeheartedly agree.  I am not one to make cliche New Year’s Resolutions, but as I reflect on my 2016, there are some areas I would like to see change.  So I wanted to make a list of them to hold myself accountable and to maybe inspire others to reflect a little and see where they could improve upon in their new year! <3  So without further ‘ado… here goes:

  1. No Texting and Driving.  I feel like a lot of us are guilty of this.  And with a few close calls since the texting phenomenon started, it’s time to get serious.  I carry my babies around in my car and their life is too precious to risk with such a senseless (and quite dangerous) act.  No, I am not better at texting and driving than the person who was killed yesterday.  No I am not invincible.  Yes, it can happen to me.  Yes, it can also happen to you!  Can someone hold me accountable to this??  Maybe we can hold one another accountable?!
  2. Be a Healthier Version of Myself.  I feel like this starts from within and will work itself outward.  Notice I did NOT say, “I want to be skinnier” or “I want to be prettier.”  No, what I mean is: I want to be healthy.  I want to rid myself of the plague of anxiety (2016 got better, though I did have some bouts of panic), so that’s a work in progress.  I want to embrace the me that my kids and husband see as beautiful (another work in progress).   The more I tell myself: “YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL” the more I am believing it!!  I am here to shout to the rooftops and say- each one of us are beautiful.  Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  If you have curves, rock them.  If you are thin, rock it!  You are beautiful and we were each made differently for good reason.  So eat with healthy intentions (be sure to indulge, too), exercise to get your heart and lungs working and pumping, but LIVE.  Because… #YOLO  A huge thanks to the folks over at Crossfit Willis for showing me the powerhouse that I never knew I could be.  Life changing, for sure.
  3. Time.  I want to get more efficient with my time and dole it out where it is needed: with family.  Again, #YOLO, and it’s important for me to spend more time with my kids.  So if that means investing in help with my business part time, cutting down on working, or making my job a little more streamlined…I need to get this under control.  I do not want to work all the time, and my kids do not want me to either.  So lots of changes coming in 2017 for Andrea Surak Photography!!!!
  4. Kindness.  I want to spread that ish everywhere.  In a world full of cruelty and pain, kindness is such a beautiful thing.  It doesn’t cost a thing and it’s the best feeling in the whole world.  If I teach my kids anything, I hope I teach them kindness.  So my goal: do a random act of kindness at least once a month. I have this GRAND idea, but it seems so hard to implement.  Stay tuned, I may get the courage to implement it!
  5. Keep my Car Clean.  Yep, I am that person that no one wants to ride with because I can’t maintain a clean car.  My sister got out of my car and had a piece of gum stuck to her arm.  Because… busy season and kids.  Haha, but geeze louise… that’s just ridiculous.  So, I want to clean it at least once a month.  To new beginnings, eh?
  6. …To Be Continued….

I get it.  We are all a work in progress.  I also understand that tomorrow is never guaranteed and people come and go from my life year after year.  It’s part of life so I want to live mine in the most positive and beautiful way I can.  So Au Revoir to 2016 and HELLO 2017- I feel like it’s going to be an amazing year.

The Woodlands Outdoor Family Photographer – Alvarez Family

The Woodlands Outdoor Family Photographer – Alvarez Family

This sweet family truly was up for anything! I was able to have so much fun getting these natural shots. While positioning families has it perks and place, I genuinely adore getting to capture the true personality of the family, in its own element. Every family has its own dynamics, identity, and style. And let me be the first to say– I am LOVING this family’s style.  Sp being a The Woodlands Outdoor Family Photographer, it was a true honor to document this special time for them!

I can’t help to think this session would be perfectly suited for Amelia Earhart, if Amelia Earhart had a big-beauti(full) family. Filled with beautiful gals, and a couple genuine dapper dans. Mom expertly decided to style the whole group in fresh white linen tops, paired perfectly with khaki bottoms. And that sunset behind them in the street?.. Oh geeze, be still my heart! This is the stuff dreams are made of guys!!

We took to Fernland Historical Park (well, really, the Montgomery, Tx fields surrounding it) for this adorable family session.  I am also super pumped to shoot their wedding at Big Sky Barn in Montgomery in 2017.  Montgomery is about a 20-30 minute drive from the Woodlands and is a classic “Texas” look.  With its big rolling plains, the founding spot of the Texas flag, and conveniently located in the middle of Conroe, The Woodlands, and Montgomery, it’s always a beautiful spot to choose from!

Of course it was amazing to see how much fun the family so obviously has together. What was truly touching though, was to see how, even after four kiddos and what I can imagine is a pretty busy life, these two have still remained lovebirds. I have no question that life is going to be chalked full of fun, love and laughter for this beautiful family and am nothing short of honored to be able to know the Alvarez family.

Conroe and The Woodlands Newborn Photography – Conlan

Conroe and The Woodlands Newborn Photography – Conlan

Welcome to the world Mr. Conlan! Of course no baby is perfect, but this little bundle of joy was pretty. darn. close! I’ll be the first to say this sweet child is what newborn photographer’s dreams are made of!! It doesn’t hurt that he just happens to be my freshest nephew!  Conlan was an absolute bliss to position. We were able to get so many amazing shots of both little man and his love-struck parents.  Being a Conroe and The Woodlands Newborn Photography professional, it was a true honor to document sweet Conlan’s first days of his life.  He is so loved already and it’s so fun sitting back and watching it.

We decided on a neutral color palette that would let Conlan truly shine and be the focal point of this newborn session.  I truly don’t think I could possibly pick a favorite shot from this session, but one of my favorites had to be combination of Conlans fire red hair paired with the blue of the background. It melted my heart to see the way Conlan’s daddy cradled him in his lap and watch his mom nestled him close to her heart, right where he belongs.

It’s a used up cliche, I know, but it seems like yesterday we were just kids ourselves. Now look at us. All grown up with families of our own. Sometimes it’s hard to believe my cousin-turned-sister has her own kiddos now, and I have my very own rugrats!  Getting to spend these moments with my cousin and her new precious family truly meant so much to me. Laughs were had, memories were made and hearts were filled. Enjoy.

With a 3 minute drive to Target from my studio, Luby’s eatery right next door, and Kasmiersky park about 10 minutes away, it’s a perfect location for any person needing to escape while we get shots of the sweet baby.  Siblings have so much to do in the local area.

The Woodlands Family Photography Outdoors – Farris Family

The Woodlands Family Photography Outdoors – Farris Family

Time is frustratingly fleeting; an unstoppable, insensitive force that moves at lightning speed–Ready or not, here it comes… This is why I treasure and genuinely love my career as a The Woodlands Family Photography Outdoors professional. I get the rare opportunity to beat the tedious march that is time. While it is a never ending reality that minutes, hours, days, and weeks will tick consistently away, these pictures will always serve as a reminder to these new parents of some of the best days of their lives.

This beautiful family is so near and dear to my heart. I have had the honor of working with Eurri in the past. I’ve watched her go from blushing bride, to expectant mother, and have seen her turn into a truly amazing mommy. The transition into this period of her life was such a beautiful thing to behold. No one can explain what it feels like to become a parent, but it’s quite obviously parenthood was obviously well suited for these two beautiful souls.

We shot this session in Alden Bridge Park in The Woodlands.  With a 15 minute drive from my studio in Conroe, a 10 minute drive to the Woodlands Mall, this is quickly becoming a favorite location of mine!

Eurri, being a photographer herself, was such a delight and pleasure to work with. It was a treat to steal little snippets of time and document them for the Farris family. One of my favorite shots was Emma’s daddy launching her in the air. Her feet were fast, but I was faster!!  It’s a humbling experience to have a close friend trust you with such a precious task. For all the people who have placed this faith in me, thank you. Genuinely. Thank you. I can promise you I will never take that honor for granted.
